Rider Handbook Update for 2024

Building on our knowledge of running the C2C for 10 years we have put together an updated rider handbook which contains the details on these pages as well as what has historically been sent as updates leading up to the event.  It really does cover everything you need to know for the 2023 event.

You can find a copy of the C2C Riders Handbook 2023 v1 HERE. (updated 29th June 2022)

Registration & Camping ::

Registration is at Seascale Sports Hall. Parking at the Sports Hall is limited and only for event vehicles and those booked for camping. Please use the parking at South Parade on the foreshore.

Camping:: Camping will be at the Cricket Club (next to the Sports Hall). We are being allowed to use the cricket green therefore camping is tent only. The cost is £12 per person (not £12 per tent) and those riders who are camping can store bikes overnight in the pavilion. Camping will be available from 17.00 hours. You must register before booking into the camping as you will need your rider number.

Due to the limited parking at the Sports Hall and Cricket Pavilion we ask anyone with a campervan/mobile home more than 5m in length (ie VW campervan size) to book onto a nearby campsite. Close to Seascale are Shepherds View at Drigg, Ravenglass Camping and Caravan Site, The Old Post Office Campsite at Santon Bridge or Seacote Park at St Bees. All between 7 & 20 mins drive.

Food on Friday and Saturday AM:: will be available from the food hub at the Seascale Methodist Church on Friday evening and Saturday morning – payment in CASH (see here for more details).

All riders must bring photo id to registration – e.g. works pass, driving licence, passport. It has to be readily recognisable as you, not just by your Mum.
No photo id = no ride. No exceptions.

Before arrival please make sure your personal details are up to date by logging in here. In particular emergency contact (should not be someone else on the ride) and medical details.

Times :: Registration 1700 to 2300 Friday night :: 0500 to 0645 Saturday morning at Seascale Sports Hall. All riders need to attend registration to collect their timing chip.

Start Times :: 0500 to 0700 Saturday morning. 500m from Sports Hall under the railway bridge to the Beach and the start line on the Jetty.

Finish :: West Cliff (Near Whitby Pavilion), North Terrace, Whitby, North Yorkshire, YO21 3EN.

Car Parking :: A park and ride system is available from Penrith Rugby Club, Winters Park, Penrith, Cumbria, CA11 8RG on Fridaty evening. Parking also available at Seascale and Whitby Leisure Centre (more details below).

Bag collection, showers & transfers :: Whitby Leisure Centre, West Cliff, Whitby, YO21 3HT. Bags can be collected from the sports hall at the Leisure Centre where showers are available. For those on the Sunday transfer back to Penrith your bike box will also be at the sports hall ready for you to repack your bike.

Camping at Whitby :: At Whitby the overnight camping will be available at Whitby Rugby Club, White Leys Road, Whitby, YO21 3PB. You must pre-book extras in advance via your My Entry login.
The camping here is tent camping so you will need to provide all your kit, (there is limited space for VW T4/T5 campervans but these must be pre booked). You will go to the Leisure Centre to repack your bike into your bike box, collect your bags, shower and change. There are also showers at the Rugby Club. You will then need to make your own way with your camping kit to Whitby Rugby Club where you can pitch your tent and have a beer in the bar. There is no food available at the Rugby Club. The Rugby Club is approx 1km from the Leisure Centre (approx 10 min walk) but further away from town. On Sunday morning breakfast will be available at the Rugby Club between 7.00 & 8.00am – £6 per head. Campsite must be clear by 8.00am. You will then need to walk back to the Leisure Centre.. At the Leisure Centre you will be responsible for making sure your bike box is on the bike trailer and you and your bags are on the coach for a 9.00am prompt departure.
Please note no dogs are allowed on the Rugby Club site and no fires or BBQ’s are allowed. Camping is charged £12 per person not per tent/campervan.

Toilets :: Available at Seascale Sports Hall, Seascale Cricket Pavilion (including porta loos), public toilets at the start, each of the four feed stations, public toilets in Whitby near the finish and at Whitby Leisure Centre. We ask all riders to be respectful of the local environment, facilities and fellow riders in all sanitary matters.

Cut Off :: A cut off at the Tunstall feed station will apply. It is very generous and would have only affected one or two riders over the past few years. You need to have left Tunstall feed station by 17:00

You will not be able to leave the Ingleby Greenhow feed station after 18:00 unless you have both front and back lights on your own bike. Riding with a group who do have lights is not the same. In the past this would have affected around 20-30 riders. Delays often come about with someone in a group having a mechanical which takes sometime to be repaired. If you think you may be affected or will be arriving in Whitby after 9.00pm please have good front and back lights – you will be glad of them…..

Entry Includes

  • Fully Signed Route.
  • 4 Feed Stations along the route – sweet and savoury snacks available and access to water to re-fill water bottles. Variety of food available at each of the four feed stations and these will include fresh baguettes, selection of cakes, soup and fruit (this is subject to change pending COVID guidelines for catering for events like this).
  • GPX route files.
  • Electronic timing.
  • Medical cover throughout the ride.
  • Showers at Whitby Leisure Centre & Whitby Rugby Club
  • Personal kit bag transfer from Seascale to Whitby Leisure Centre.
  • Windermere Ferry Crossing.

The personal kit bag should weigh no more than 10Kg when placed on our pre-loading scales and be labelled with your name and ride number. For those camping we can transfer your tent too, so long as it’s not of marquee proportions! Sorry but no liquids in the bags – they just make a mess of your kit. Unless you are making your own arrangements please hand your kit bag over to our Kit Van Marshals based at registration before heading to the Start. Your kit bag will be at Whitby Leisure Centre awaiting your arrival.

We will have two bike mechanics on hand between 18:00 and 23:00 on Friday night and one between 4.00 and 8.00 on Saturday morning to help with any last minute mechanical issues you may have (this is not an invitation to arrive with an un-maintained bike!). After this the next opportunity to deal with any major problems will be in Kendal. There will also be a bike mechanic at Cockley Beck, between Hardknott & Wrynose to help with minor problems.

Bikes on the ride

The following bikes are NOT allowed to take part in this event

  • 26″ or small wheel (MTB’s)
  • Bikes fitted with tri-bars
  • Electric bikes
  • Single speed bikes

In addition Hybrid bikes are not generally allowed.  If you think you should be exempt you should contact us before entering, if having entered we will not make any exception to requests less than 2 months prior to the event.  To be clear if the reason for using the bike is “its the only bike I have” or “we are doing it for charity”, it will be refused.  Any persons looking for an exception will have to provide evidence of a 100 mile+ ride on the bike in question.   WE would regard any bike without drop handlebars as in the hybrid bike category.  Please do not make assumptions, if in doubt contact us for clarity.

ROAD tandems with 700c wheels are allowed to take part, please contact us prior to entry.  We have a sweet spot for tandems so 2nd rider will not have to pay but we do need them to enter the event.

Kit List

We would encourage you to wear whatever you feel most comfortable in, giving regard to the fact you will be crossing the country and the very changeable nature of the weather in Northern England. There are a few things we have to insist upon:

  • Helmet (to be worn!).
  • Rain jacket (with sleeves).
  • Repair kit including spare inner tubes, pump, multi tool & tyre levers.
  • Rear light please for benefit of other riders use on constant light not flashing.
  • Front lights are now MANDATORY (added 2020) – can be simple white LED light but if vaguely likely to be on road after 20:00 should have lights that can light up road not just let other road users know you are there.  Please use on constant light not flashing.
  • Maintained bike in good working order, specifically brakes fully serviced and if using rim brakes, rims are not damaged or excessively worn.
  • Speedo (a device that can show your distance that day)
  • We suggest you bring some change with you on the ride, just in case. You might decide on an impromptu café stop or an emergency inner tube purchase.

We are providing back-up facilities therefore we must insist that your supporters, friends and family do not bring any vehicles out on the route to follow as this will create unnecessary congestion and will be a danger to cyclists and other road users. We are keen to encourage support at the start and finish only.

Supporters should not visit any of the feed stations located at Kendal, Hardraw, Tunstall or Ingleby Greenhow.  There is no parking available on local roads or at these feed stations – please do not encourage your support to go to these locations, they will not be able to get in the feed station (not even for a wee) and it could all be a bit unpleasant. Without being rude you are not welcome at the feed stations by us or by the local residents, supporter vehicles cause safety and security issues for us and the riders and disturbance for local residents. We appreciate you supporting this event by where possible not driving along the route we have marked for riders or turning up at feed stations. Thank you.

If you wish your supporters to see you on route our recommendations are:
– use public parking in Kendal and walk to meet them near the feed station. No supporters are allowed in feed station, however, there is a large grass area nearby called Gooseholme by the river which makes a great area to meet family and friends.
– Catterick Racecourse car park just off the A1, see below.

– Danby (but approach via A171)

Please note parking in Whitby is restricted either pay and display or disc parking. You can collect a disc from Whitby Leisure or in town if required. With a disc the maximum stay is two hours. Whitby do operate a Park and Ride to West Cliff every 15 minutes until 18:30.

Parking at Penrith, Seascale and Whitby

Penrith Rugby Club – for people using the coach transfer, please park on the far left hand side of the car park. So we are neatly out of the way of club users over the weekend.

At Seascale there is a large car park at South Parade on the foreshore where the event start jetty is located. Please do not park in bays marked out in BLUE. These are reserved for staff at Sellafield. You may get a parking fine.

At Whitby on street parking is disc parking limited to 2 hours. Parking meters also apply in some places and are limited to a certain number of hours. The leisure centre car park is limited to 24 hours if paying at the meter however 2-7 day permits can be purchased in advance or on arrival (details below)
